A clear definition

Delegation

Delegation is assigning responsibility for an outcome together with an understood level of authority and accountability.

What it means in practice

A useful agreement defines the result, boundaries, required information, escalation conditions and review point. Passing a task without the authority to make ordinary decisions can preserve owner dependence. Delegation does not remove the need for supervision or consequences. It makes those expectations more specific. Begin with a bounded recurring decision and adjust the authority as capability and evidence support it. An effective handover includes a chance for the recipient to explain how they would handle a realistic example. This reveals gaps that a simple statement of understanding may miss. Review the outcome at an agreed point, and distinguish visibility from permission. If every acceptable choice is reversed because the manager prefers another method, the arrangement will continue to encourage dependence.

A fictional worked example

A colleague may approve a routine supplier order within an agreed budget and escalate price or quality exceptions.

A useful question

Which decisions can the person make without returning to you for permission?
